HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOUR AC DRAIN LINE IS CLOGGED?
1.Does your digital thermostat flash “COOL ON” and your Air Handler isn’t running? This is usually your first indication the drain line is clogged.
2. Go over to the Air Handler and manually PULL OUT THE FLOAT SWITCH. Like this:
3. See if water has collected inside the float switch holder. If water has collected inside this means YOUR DRAIN LINE IS CLOGGED. The purpose of this switch is to turn off the air handler when the drain line is clogged to prevent damage. Water collects inside, which allows the float to rise to the top. This then creates an electrical connection and turns off your AC unit.
4. Even if it’s dry inside, keep the float switch out of the holder and allow the float to stay in the DOWN POSITION. Let it rest outside of the holder with the float down for 5-10 minutes. See if the air handler turns back on and functions normally. If the unit works with the float switch out YOUR DRAIN LINE IS CLOGGED! Sometimes when you pull the float switch, it may be dry because water has temporarily run back into the air handler when you pull the switch. This is why you need to let it rest to fully diagnose.
